Footage captures Donno's attempt to hand flag to Calderoli
A fistfight broke out in the Italian parliament on Wednesday, leading to one opposition lawmaker being hospitalized, following a disagreement over a contested autonomy bill. Video footage taken just before the brawl shows Leonardo Donno, a member of the opposition 5 Star Movement party, trying to hand an Italian flag to regional affairs minister Roberto Calderoli.
In the video, two parliamentary clerks in the Chamber of Deputies are seen attempting to separate the pair, but the situation quickly escalated. Other lawmakers became involved in the altercation, and Donno was eventually taken to hospital.
The incident has sparked outrage in Italy, with many politicians condemning the violence. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the brawl "unacceptable" and said that it "damages the image of the country."
